Introduction to Fire Extinguishers Selection

Portable Fire Extinguisher is the first line defense against small fire. We can easily recognize its appearance while we walk through the plant site or building inside it. But the question is "Can those Fire Extinguishers used to put out any type of fire?"

Of course they can not. They can only be used for type of fire as described on its label. Never use the extinguisher for any fire other than what are described on the label.

Type of fire extinguishers

To choose proper types, choose according to types of fires:

Class A are suitable for ordinary combustible materials such as paper, wood, fabric, rubber and most plastics. The numerical rating for this type is 2-A. It means that the extinguisher can extinguish fire as much as 2-1/2 gallon water on ordinary combustible materials.

Class B are suitable for fire involving flammable or combustible liquids and gases, such as gasoline, kerosene, fuel oil and grease. The numerical rating for this type of extinguisher is 10-B, which means the extinguisher can diminish fire of area around 10 square feet.

Class C are suitable for fire involving all electrical-energized equipments, such as appliances, breaker, wiring and circuit breakers. The numerical code for this type of extinguisher is C, which means not conductive extinguisher agent.

Class D are devoted only for fires that involve combustible metal such as magnesium, titanium, potassium and sodium. These metals are commonly found in laboratory. This extinguisher type has no numerical rating.

Besides the above types, a multi purposes fire extinguisher is also available. An example of it is Class A, B, C extinguishers and is recommended for used inside building where many types of fires encountered.

Chemical contents of extinguishers

Each extinguisher type contains different extinguisher agent. Lets talk one by one of chemical contents of extinguishers.

Water. Water extinguisher and air-pressurized water is only suitable for Class A extinguisher. Water extinguishers are filled with water and pressurized oxygen. Never use water extinguisher for extinguish fire involving electrical fires or class D fires! It will not put out the fires, it will make the fires spreading and getting bigger!

Foam or powder. Fire extinguishers, which are filled with foam or powder and pressurized with nitrogen, is usually called by dry chemical extinguishers. Dry chemical fire extinguishers are available in BC type and ABC type. BC type chemical is sodium bicarbonate or potassium bicarbonate, which is mildly corrosive. ABC type is filled with monoammonium phospahate, which is a sticky yellow powder and can damage electrical appliances. Dry chemical extinguishers are suitable for class A, B and C fires.

Carbon dioxide (CO2). Carbon dioxide extinguishers are suitable for class B and C fires. This type of extinguisher is best applied on electrical fires.

Choosing the proper fire extinguishers are very fundamental in order to put out small fire at the plant site and building inside it. Remember, all fire extinguishers are not suitable for all fire types. Make the best choices to provide best Fire Protection.

East Enders Fire Safety Advice

Now when people think about the East End of London and fires there are probably two events that really spring to mind. Firstly the great fire of London which actually started in the West End, but hey, an End’s an End as far as most visitors to London are concerned. The second event would be the terrible inferno’s that raged during World War Two as the Nazi’s relentlessly bombed England’s capital in the misguided belief that the will of the British people would falter. Big mistake Adolf.

Well there is a new East End fire threat now to go down in memory, the Queen Vic on Albert Square is going up in smoke and this has prompted warnings over real fires and the fact that hundreds of people die in real fires each year throughout the United Kingdom.

There has sadly been a 20% increase in the rate of fire related deaths in London in the past twelve months with over fifty people tragically losing their lives. The sad fact is that many of these deaths could be avoided if people took a few routine safety precautions.

Firstly, get smoke alarms and install them correctly in your home. Test them weekly by pressing the test button to ensure the batteries are working and the alarm sounds. If you can’t afford to buy an alarm you can actually get them free of charge from your local fire brigade. Give them a call and get a Fire Safety office to come round and fit them. This simple and free service could very well save your life or that of a family member.

Secondly, plan an escape route in the event that a fire starts. Ensure everyone in the property knows the plan and practice it. It may sound dumb but in reality such a simple procedure could easily save your life. Know how to escape the property and where to meet to make sure everyone is out safely. Keep doors shut at night to help prevent the spread of fire and leave hallways uncluttered so people can exit in the dark or smoke filled rooms. Many commercial smoke detectors for homes have emergency lights built in so as to provide a visual aid to the exit point.

If your budget permits you could also purchase escape ladders. These are small and light weight devices that fold out to produce an escape ladder. With one of these you can safely climb down from upper floors to the safety of the street.

Avoid leaving machines such as dishwashers or washing machines on overnight. Many fires start in the early hours without people being aware. Faulty wiring can cause a fire from such a device and without a working alarm you could very well drown in the smoke fumes produced by the fire. Would you rather save a few pennies on your electricity bill or your family’s life? I choose life.

In a fire, the most important thing is to escape safely. Get out and stay out. Call the fire brigade and let them tackle the blaze. Only fight a small fire with an extinguisher if you are confident in its use.

The equipment also comes in different types and varieties, all of which are filled with powder and pressurized with nitrogen. Other kinds also feature a check control device and discharge facility, which is useful in maintenance and verification purposes. There is also the standard type, which is filled with either potassium or sodium bicarbonate. Then there is the multi-purpose extinguisher, which is filled with yellow powder known as monoammonium phosphate. Studying the chemical or powder’s properties is also ideal, for it gives us firsthand information regarding possible dangers and effects.

In using these extinguishers, it is always advisable to familiarize oneself with instructions. It is also crucial to understand relative procedures. There are also a couple of things to consider in handling equipment like dry powder Fire Extinguishers. First, hold the extinguisher’s lever firmly. Second, aim the jet towards the base of the flames. Third, for spilt liquids, try aiming the jet or horn towards the side of the fires instead of directing your aim towards the flames. In case of electrical fires, it is also recommended to directly aim towards the fire after switching off the current.

If you are wondering how a safety device works, you can start by doing some research. Generally, since these extinguishers are comprised of powder, the release of said compound somewhat neutralizes the oxygen surrounding fires and flames. It seemingly works like a protective cover, separating fuel and oxygen, therefore eliminating fires slowly. In terms of proper handling, these types of extinguishers are normally installed with the use of supplied brackets. Other establishments even allocate a specific space for each equipment with signs identifying the extinguisher’s type and purpose.

It also pays to inspect extinguishers regularly. You can also hire a specialist to do the inspection at least once a month if not have each equipment serviced annually.

Remember that all safety devices need to be maintained properly. The maintenance and testing procedures likewise helps in determining possible repairs, recharging or replacement. Pressure testing is also a recommended procedure that helps in examining the condition and safety of cylinders. You can also start by reading the manual and label for determination of testing dates.

Information regarding safety and maintenance can be overwhelming, given the many details. The same reason also goes with identifying the different kinds of fire equipment. The process may require time and money, though one can consider maintenance and testing procedures as worthy investments. Others may also view maintenance tips and reminders as costly and expensive. However, we can look beyond figures and expenses and in the end, decide to consider prevention and safety as learning processes.

Fire Extinguisher training for members of staff should be relevant to the building, the type of fire that may occur and the type of extinguisher likely to be used. The majority of fire extinguisher training courses will contain information on fire fighting, types of fire and types of fire extinguishers, and the theory of combustion. As mentioned before, most businesses will need a fire warden. The position of fire warden will require additional training including evacuation procedures and fire prevention in order to perform their role effectively.

For any staff member, responsible person or fire warden, it is vital to know the locations and type of extinguishers that are held in your workplace, you should familiarise yourself with the information on the extinguisher body and learn what type of fires each extinguishers can and cannot be safety used on. You should be aware of escape routes and evacuation areas as well as any special risks your workplace may contain. Attending a Fire Safety training course may teach you things you did not realise or may have forgotten as well as making you more aware of the everyday fire risks all around you in day to day life.

5 Major Types of UK Fire Extinguishers

Which Fire Extinguishers are proper for your home or office? When selecting one for different areas where you live or work, you have many options from which to choose. Each type of Fire Extinguisher is effective for particular types of fires. Thus, when choosing a certain type of fire extinguishers, try to match them up with the most likely types of fires that would occur there.

Before determining which type of fire extinguishers you need, you should first review the types of fires that exist. The UK classifies fires into six different categories, based on the type of fuel that, well–fuels the fire:

• Class A: Solids
• Class B: Liquids
• Class C: Gases
• Class D: Metals
• Class F: Cooking Oils
• Electrical fires

After learning the types of fires that exist in the UK, it is time to select the right type of fire extinguisher. The five major types are:

1. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Fire Extinguisher
As you may recall from science lessons in primary school, carbon dioxide is the “stuff” that we breathe out, and what plants breathe in. CO2 fire extinguishers remove both heat and oxygen from the fire. These extinguishers are primarily effective for Class B fires and electrical fires in particular. On the other hand, they are relatively useless when combating Class A fires. Since the Montreal Protocol has made Halon extinguishers illegal in the UK, consider the co2 fire extinguisher as a substitute. Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are also perfect for office settings, as the substance is risk-free when using it around electrical equipment.

2. Foam Fire Extinguisher
Foam Fire Extinguishers remove the heat from the fire, and separate the oxygen from the other elements. This type of fire extinguisher is ideal for both Class A and Class B fires. Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) is especially useful for putting out liquid spill fires that include substances such as:

• Fats
• Oil
• Paints
• Petrol

3. Powder Fire Extinguisher:
Do you need a fire extinguisher that is effective for various types of fires? If so, then consider this type of fire extinguisher. In particular, Powder Fire Extinguishers are ideal for Class B fires, which include substances such as:

• Hydrogen
• Methane
• Natural Gas
• Propane

4. Water Fire Extinguisher:
As we have learned in the earliest stages of our lives, water functions as one of the most effective substances for extinguishing fires. Just as carbon monoxide alarms are efficient in warning about the deadly gas, Water Fire Extinguishers are strictly efficient in putting out Class A fires. Water fire extinguishers function by removing heat from the fire, which thus puts out the flames.

5. Wet Chemical Fire Extinguisher:
This is the only type of fire extinguisher that specializes in extinguishing Class F fires. However, it is also useful in putting out Class A fires as well.

If you are preparing to fight a fire, then you have several excellent options. Thus, when choosing a fire extinguisher, be certain to choose wisely!

Fire Safety and Fire Extinguisher Signs

Safety and awareness always go hand in hand to warn, protect, and prevent against a potential danger or harm. However, some people do not recognize that Fire Safety signs are essential in saving one’s life.

Fire Extinguishers are widely used in different buildings and workplaces. As required by local ordinances, laws, or regulations, they must be placed in different areas and corners of the building for Fire Protection and safety purposes. Nevertheless, since they are not used regularly, their locations are likely ignored and forgotten.

This is why it is necessary to display proper Fire Extinguisher signs. These safety signs help employees and occupants locate the extinguishers in times of fire emergencies. One thing for sure, these signs are the best way to ensure that the fire extinguishers are found promptly and used precisely.

But because fire extinguishers have different types and classifications, it is best to get you familiar with each through different signs and symbols. There are actually a number of these signs that you can use for your home, office, or building.

1. Fire extinguisher chart- This signage usually uses graphical symbols. This chart will provide information for both staff and the public regarding classes of fire and extinguisher types. Some manufacturers even include dates of production and expiration.

2. Extinguisher pocket guide- This pocket guide usually appears in charts and are excellent forms to supplement fire trainings especially for new employees and staff. The signage serves the purpose of orienting the public regarding the types and the colors of fire extinguishers. Check marks, on the other hand, are used to identify specific usage of each type.

3. Water extinguisher sign- The signage is marked with the word "water" to specify clearly the location and type of the extinguisher. It also identifies Class A or ordinary combustible materials as the most suitable for this type

4. Carbon dioxide (CO2) extinguisher sign- This does not only mark the specified location and type of the extinguisher but also present a graphical symbol for different classes of fire.

5. Foam extinguisher sign- This sign also illustrates the type of extinguisher and the classes it is most suitable for and not. This is necessary to prevent the public and staff from using the wrong extinguisher for the wrong type of fire.

6. ABC powder extinguisher sign- The signage gives illustration that this specific type of extinguisher is suitable with many classes of fire such as "A" or combustible materials, "B" or flammable materials, and "C" or flammable gases. It also provides a graphic symbol, stating clearly that this type is also safe for electrical equipment.
There are many other different types of fire extinguisher signs; sizes and appearance vary from the cheapest to the most expensive ones. Although the quality sometimes affects certain situations, what is important is that the signs remain visible and readable at all times.

Safety signs can give you presence of mind. They give proper information and details regarding the function and the usage of equipment such as fire extinguishers in times of disturbing calamities and emergencies. Nevertheless, building administrators must always ensure that the equipment pieces are also properly working, to avoid greater risks.

Using a Co2 Fire Extinguisher

There are a number of different types of Fire Extinguisher. CO2 extinguishers are among the most common. You’ll be able to identify them by their red casing, with a black band indicating that the contents are carbon dioxide. Contents of a Fire Extinguisher are also written on the extinguisher, usually in white letters. It’s a good idea to make sure you know whether your extinguisher is a CO2 model, or some other type. That way, you’ll know how to use it properly.

The first thing to do when you see a fire, before you even grab the carbon dioxide fire extinguisher, is to let others know there’s a problem. If there’s an alarm, use that to alert the other people in the building. If no alarm is available, tell someone and have him or her spread the word. Call the fire department before you attempt to put out a fire, and don’t try to deal with one unless you know what to do.

Then, be sure that the CO2 fire extinguisher is really the right tool for the job. It works on most fires, including flammable liquids, gases, and electrical fires. However, the pressure at which the extinguisher operates can damage items, and small pieces of ice may fly out of it. CO2 fire extinguishers are not commonly used around computers because of the possibility of damage. Instead, another type of "clean" fire extinguisher may be used. For most applications where a grease or electrical fire is a danger, however, carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are a good choice, because they leave behind no powdery or harmful residues. Some dry chemical extinguishers contain dangerous chemicals, and all of them leave behind a mess to clean up.

Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are also not ideal for some paper, cardboard, or plastic fires, since they can’t displace enough oxygen to make sure that the fire is out. Because these extinguishers don’t always cool the fire enough, there may be enough heat to cause a problem. When the carbon dioxide dissipates, and the oxygen returns, the fire may re-ignite. For oil fires and electrical fires, however, they are quite effective. Never use a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher on a fire containing flammable metals – it can actually increase the chemical reaction!

Once you’re certain that what you need is a CO2 fire extinguisher, release its trigger mechanism by pulling out the plastic tag. Move the discharge horn up to a right angle with your body, and use your body to support it. Never hold this discharge horn with your hand while using it. Metal discharge horns will become so cold on a CO2 fire extinguisher that your hand could freeze to them. You should only deal with a fire when it’s in the very earliest stages. Never try to put out a fire that’s gotten established in a building, or try to deal with a fire if you’re not sure what you’re doing. Remember – you’re not obligated to try to put a fire out. Call the fire department as soon as possible if you’re not confident you can deal with the fire.

Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers make a lot of noise when used, so don’t be surprised. Aim at the base of the flame, whether the burning material is located, not at the tips. If you have any worries about whether you’re doing things right, or you empty the extinguisher without putting out the fire, leave the area immediately. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Your fire extinguisher isn’t the only thing that’s useful in an emergency, either. A fire blanket is an excellent solution for any fire that’s smaller than the blanket. Always be sure to hold the blanket in such a way that it protects your hands, and leave it on the fire for at least thirty minutes.

Never walk on an area where a fire has been, even if you’ve used an extinguisher on it. It may reignite, or you could find that your extinguisher’s CO2 supplies are exhausted unexpectedly. Recharge all extinguishers as soon as possible after you use them, to make sure they’re ready for the next possible accident. Not having a working fire extinguisher on hand could be a big problem. Remember to inspect your CO2 fire extinguisher monthly to be certain it’s ready for use.

Providing Portable Fire Extinguishers in the Workplace

When considering national Fire Protection strategies for your business, one of the most basic necessities is the hand-held or portable Fire Extinguisher. Providing access to well maintained and routinely inspected Fire Extinguishers can literally be a life saver for you and your employees. But it is equally important that everyone is prepared on how to use them in case of an emergency

Split second decisions from you and your employees will make all the difference if a fire does break out. A portable fire extinguisher can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or containing it until the fire department arrives; but employees with the best intentions may fail, or even make the fire worse if not properly trained on fire extinguishers and how to operate them. And even the best fire equipment will not operate if it is not recharged and maintained properly. History has proved that nearly every fire extinguisher failure can be traced back to human negligence in regards to maintenance or usage.

Here are some things to remember when providing portable extinguishers in your national Fire Protection plan.

First, remember that a portable fire extinguisher should only be used when the fire is confined to a small area and not growing. Everyone getting out safely is the number one priority so if the fire has already escalated or the room is filled with smoke- just get out.

Next, teach everyone to remember the word PASS. This is an acronym that explains the main process for grabbing and using a portable extinguisher.

To operate a fire extinguisher, remember the word PASS:

Pull the pin

Aim low

Squeeze the handle

Sweep from side to side

Next, remember to bring in a professionally certified national Fire Protection specialist to help select the right kind of extinguisher for your businesses work environs. Not all extinguishers are appropriate for all types of fires and all types of conditions. Plus, you will need that relationship with a national fire protection provider to perform your annual maintenance and testing on your fire extinguishers and any other fire protection you install.

Make sure that extinguishers are hung in the most appropriate spots, you have enough coverage, and that they remain clean and undamaged. You may need to rely on your fire protection testing and inspection provider to help you understand how many fire extinguishers you need, they type, and where to place them.

Lastly remember that providing working extinguishers is only one element of a national fire protection program. Depending on your business and square footage you may need other fire suppression systems and training on how they operate. To recap, remember, it is just as important to train your employees on how and when to use a fire extinguisher, as it as to provide it for them.

Firefighting gears are designed to protect us in times of fires outbreak or incidents. It is recommended that safety practices and proper maintenance are needed if you own one of these paraphernalia. Today, there are many ways to safeguard and maintain your firefighting equipments and one of the most effective methods is the use of Fire Extinguisher cabinets. However some homeowners today still wonder why they are required to purchase a cupboard. Here are some of the three most logical reasons why you need one.

Protection and Maintenance

Your extinguishers need every care and maintenance they need. A cupboard can protect your equipments from tampering, weathering, water and dirt. Typically, a storage cabinet is made of durable and high-quality material, guaranteeing high level of protection and ensuring longevity. Depending on the type of storage you choose, they can be made of polyethylene and with built-in rubber seals. For much better protection, choose a cabinet with safety locks and anti-theft alarm.

Keep Fire Extinguishers in their Proper Places

Extinguishers are made of large metal material that can block and distract the pathway if they are not properly stored in a cupboard. These tools are hard and they may potential cause accidental knock offs. They may even roll out and someone may suffer from crushed toes. As a businessman, you should consider a cabinet for your firefighting equipments as it can affect your reputation and beside the state requires you to.

Provide Visibility and Accessibility

A cabinet is an attention grabber especially if you have an antique fire extinguisher. They are perfect in times of emergency. When incident occurs, cabinet can guarantee that you can find your equipments easily. When choosing for a place to integrate your storage area, make sure that it is accessible to the public or to your family. It should be visible enough for everyone to know that your house or company has firefighting equipments.

It is typical for us to be inquisitive. Our nature dictates us to learn more about things that interests us. Furthermore, if we do not understand a particular subject matter, we usually resort to researching in order to gain grasp of the topic. We do the same thing when we want to know more about a particular product before buying it. There are instances when what you know about a particular item is very general. You want it but you really do not know the intricate details about it and this holds you back from buying the item. A good example of this is buying extinguishers.

Generally, what we know about this item is that it can put out simple cases of fire. If you share the same idea with this thought, you are correct. However, do you have an idea that using this device does not mean that it can put out flames effectively and safely for all sorts of fire sources? This is true. If you consider buying one then you need to be extra careful on selecting because this device cannot be generally used in all types of fire. That is why it is better for you to consult shops with Fire Extinguisher service to know more about these items.

It is better to visit them so that you can see the items being sold and their differences from each other. Yes, it is good to do your own research online and read the facts that experts say about this item. However, nothing beats when a real person can explain to you in terms of an ordinary person would use. Of course, this does not mean that what you read online is inadequate or even not good enough. It is undeniable that the facts you read on the internet is the fastest way to gain understanding but at times they can be too technical. Sometimes the terms used might not be clearly explained and it might take more time understanding one item to get the whole reading. From your reading, you might sometimes pose questions that are left unanswered for days. If you are able to talk to people with expertise on extinguishers, you can have these questions answered right away.
