Portable Fire Extinguisher is the first line defense against small fire. We can easily recognize its appearance while we walk through the plant site or building inside it. But the question is "Can those Fire Extinguishers used to put out any type of fire?"

Of course they can not. They can only be used for type of fire as described on its label. Never use the extinguisher for any fire other than what are described on the label.

Type of fire extinguishers

To choose proper types, choose according to types of fires:

Class A are suitable for ordinary combustible materials such as paper, wood, fabric, rubber and most plastics. The numerical rating for this type is 2-A. It means that the extinguisher can extinguish fire as much as 2-1/2 gallon water on ordinary combustible materials.

Class B are suitable for fire involving flammable or combustible liquids and gases, such as gasoline, kerosene, fuel oil and grease. The numerical rating for this type of extinguisher is 10-B, which means the extinguisher can diminish fire of area around 10 square feet.

Class C are suitable for fire involving all electrical-energized equipments, such as appliances, breaker, wiring and circuit breakers. The numerical code for this type of extinguisher is C, which means not conductive extinguisher agent.

Class D are devoted only for fires that involve combustible metal such as magnesium, titanium, potassium and sodium. These metals are commonly found in laboratory. This extinguisher type has no numerical rating.

Besides the above types, a multi purposes fire extinguisher is also available. An example of it is Class A, B, C extinguishers and is recommended for used inside building where many types of fires encountered.

Chemical contents of extinguishers

Each extinguisher type contains different extinguisher agent. Lets talk one by one of chemical contents of extinguishers.

Water. Water extinguisher and air-pressurized water is only suitable for Class A extinguisher. Water extinguishers are filled with water and pressurized oxygen. Never use water extinguisher for extinguish fire involving electrical fires or class D fires! It will not put out the fires, it will make the fires spreading and getting bigger!

Foam or powder. Fire extinguishers, which are filled with foam or powder and pressurized with nitrogen, is usually called by dry chemical extinguishers. Dry chemical fire extinguishers are available in BC type and ABC type. BC type chemical is sodium bicarbonate or potassium bicarbonate, which is mildly corrosive. ABC type is filled with monoammonium phospahate, which is a sticky yellow powder and can damage electrical appliances. Dry chemical extinguishers are suitable for class A, B and C fires.

Carbon dioxide (CO2). Carbon dioxide extinguishers are suitable for class B and C fires. This type of extinguisher is best applied on electrical fires.

Choosing the proper fire extinguishers are very fundamental in order to put out small fire at the plant site and building inside it. Remember, all fire extinguishers are not suitable for all fire types. Make the best choices to provide best Fire Protection.

Now when people think about the East End of London and fires there are probably two events that really spring to mind. Firstly the great fire of London which actually started in the West End, but hey, an End’s an End as far as most visitors to London are concerned. There has sadly been a 20% increase in the rate of fire related deaths in London in the past twelve months with over fifty people tragically losing their lives. The sad fact is that many of these deaths could be avoided if people took a few routine safety precautions.

Firstly, get smoke alarms and install them correctly in your home. Test them weekly by pressing the test button to ensure the batteries are working and the alarm sounds. If you can’t afford to buy an alarm you can actually get them free of charge from your local fire brigade. Give them a call and get a Fire Safety office to come round and fit them. This simple and free service could very well save your life or that of a family member.

Secondly, plan an escape route in the event that a fire starts. Ensure everyone in the property knows the plan and practice it. It may sound dumb but in reality such a simple procedure could easily save your life. Know how to escape the property and where to meet to make sure everyone is out safely. Keep doors shut at night to help prevent the spread of fire and leave hallways uncluttered so people can exit in the dark or smoke filled rooms. Many commercial smoke detectors for homes have emergency lights built in so as to provide a visual aid to the exit point.

If your budget permits you could also purchase escape ladders. These are small and light weight devices that fold out to produce an escape ladder. With one of these you can safely climb down from upper floors to the safety of the street.

Avoid leaving machines such as dishwashers or washing machines on overnight. Many fires start in the early hours without people being aware. Faulty wiring can cause a fire from such a device and without a working alarm you could very well drown in the smoke fumes produced by the fire. Would you rather save a few pennies on your electricity bill or your family’s life? I choose life.

In a fire, the most important thing is to escape safely. Get out and stay out. Call the fire brigade and let them tackle the blaze. Only fight a small fire with an extinguisher if you are confident in its use.

There are a number of different types of Fire Extinguisher. CO2 extinguishers are among the most common. You’ll be able to identify them by their red casing, with a black band indicating that the contents are carbon dioxide. Contents of a Fire Extinguisher are also written on the extinguisher, usually in white letters. It’s a good idea to make sure you know whether your extinguisher is a CO2 model, or some other type. That way, you’ll know how to use it properly.

The first thing to do when you see a fire, before you even grab the carbon dioxide fire extinguisher, is to let others know there’s a problem. If there’s an alarm, use that to alert the other people in the building. If no alarm is available, tell someone and have him or her spread the word. Call the fire department before you attempt to put out a fire, and don’t try to deal with one unless you know what to do.

Then, be sure that the CO2 fire extinguisher is really the right tool for the job. It works on most fires, including flammable liquids, gases, and electrical fires. However, the pressure at which the extinguisher operates can damage items, and small pieces of ice may fly out of it. CO2 fire extinguishers are not commonly used around computers because of the possibility of damage. Instead, another type of "clean" fire extinguisher may be used. For most applications where a grease or electrical fire is a danger, however, carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are a good choice, because they leave behind no powdery or harmful residues. Some dry chemical extinguishers contain dangerous chemicals, and all of them leave behind a mess to clean up.

Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are also not ideal for some paper, cardboard, or plastic fires, since they can’t displace enough oxygen to make sure that the fire is out. Because these extinguishers don’t always cool the fire enough, there may be enough heat to cause a problem. When the carbon dioxide dissipates, and the oxygen returns, the fire may re-ignite. For oil fires and electrical fires, however, they are quite effective. Never use a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher on a fire containing flammable metals – it can actually increase the chemical reaction!

Once you’re certain that what you need is a CO2 fire extinguisher, release its trigger mechanism by pulling out the plastic tag. Move the discharge horn up to a right angle with your body, and use your body to support it. Never hold this discharge horn with your hand while using it. Metal discharge horns will become so cold on a CO2 fire extinguisher that your hand could freeze to them. You should only deal with a fire when it’s in the very earliest stages. Never try to put out a fire that’s gotten established in a building, or try to deal with a fire if you’re not sure what you’re doing. Remember – you’re not obligated to try to put a fire out. Call the fire department as soon as possible if you’re not confident you can deal with the fire.

Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers make a lot of noise when used, so don’t be surprised. Aim at the base of the flame, whether the burning material is located, not at the tips. If you have any worries about whether you’re doing things right, or you empty the extinguisher without putting out the fire, leave the area immediately. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Your fire extinguisher isn’t the only thing that’s useful in an emergency, either. A fire blanket is an excellent solution for any fire that’s smaller than the blanket. Always be sure to hold the blanket in such a way that it protects your hands, and leave it on the fire for at least thirty minutes.

Never walk on an area where a fire has been, even if you’ve used an extinguisher on it. It may reignite, or you could find that your extinguisher’s CO2 supplies are exhausted unexpectedly. Recharge all extinguishers as soon as possible after you use them, to make sure they’re ready for the next possible accident. Not having a working fire extinguisher on hand could be a big problem. Remember to inspect your CO2 fire extinguisher monthly to be certain it’s ready for use.
